Learning "Hebrew"

Making Latkes tonight, Jonah was using a whisk to stir ingredients. Sam wanted to use a fork instead. Jonah said, "I want to use the YISK!"
"What's a yisk?"
"It's the Hebrew word for whisk."

Hanukah lights burning down the house! (and right before we move!)

We are dumber than a 3-year-old...
Aliza: I smell something burning.
Sam: Me too!
(Both of us frantically running around the house)
Aliza: Where is it coming from?
Sam: I don't know.
Jonah: It's coming from the candles. In the menorah.

Talking about edamame beans:
Mommy: "You guys are like two peas in a pod"
Daddy: "We are like two edamame beans in a pod"
Jonah: "No, we are like THREE edamame beans in a pod!"

At bedtime:

"I need you all the time with me Mommy."

Funny Quotes

"Do you know where all those old dinosaurs went mommy? To the museum so people could look at them!"

We were in Jonah's room and he started wiping the wall with a wipe. He asked ifnthat was ok and I said yes. He said, "Daddy prefers I don't do that but mommy prefers that I do.". I started laughing hysterically and he said,
"Calm down mommy and use your words!"

Sam brought home dinner tonight...
Me: You win The Daddy of Year Award!
Jonah: You win Daddy of the Urinal!
Me: No, no, Daddy of the YEAR Award
Jonah: No, Daddy of the Urinal!

‎"Ok honey, 5 more minutes and it's time to go." (no reaction). "Did you hear me?"
"Yup".
"What did I say?"
"You said 10 more minutes and it's time to go."
I'm being outsmarted by an almost 3-yr old.

There's measuring and then there's measuring

This afternion I asked Jonah to help me make carrot muffins. He was all excited to get going. He asked how he could help so I told him he could help by measuring the ingredients. He immediately went into the utility drawer and took out the measuring tape (he calls it "measure tape"). Then he proceeds to line up the carrots and measure them!

When we were all done, we tasted the muffins and he said, "We made these together! That's teamwork!"

Jonah Concert on Eve of Hurricane Irene

Love and Country Music

So, Jonah has a fondness for John Denver that started with his love of the song, "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" (he knows all the words and plays it on his guitar!) We bought a John Denver CD that Jonah has listened to a few times, and he really likes "Country Road" also. The other night before bedtime, I was singing him "Country Road" and I messed up some of the words. He jumped right in and sang all the right lyrics... "Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains growing like the weeds".

Then he said to me, "Honey, I want you to sing to me in the chair". I said, "Did you just call me Honey?" He started to laugh... "Yes!!!"

I want to be just like you

Today in the supermarket, Jonah was helping me pick stuff out, etc and totally unprovoked he said, "Mommy, when I grow up I want to be just like you!" I couldn't get anything more specific, but that was pretty cool!

Later the same day, he was eating his lunch and he said, "Actually Mommy, I want to be just like Daddy when I grow up!" (I think he was thinking about being a man). He said, "I will be a boy for a long time though." :) Thank goodness!

Giving Birth

When we went to get Jonah in the morning yesterday, he had his bunny under his pajama shirt. He said he was going to have a baby and then he had bunny come out and he said that since bunny is just a baby, he can't talk yet.
If only it were that easy!!!

When we grow up

I asked Jonah to put his foot next to mine. I told him that one day his foot would be bigger than mine. He said, "One day we are all going to be adults!"

Jonah-isms

"The interesting thing about this is...."

"Actually, Mommy..."

"Mommy, her mouth doesn't work. All she does is scream!"

"Mommy, can I touch your beautiful hair? It's so colorful."

Reading Ready

Jonah has been pointing to the words on the books he has and "reading" by saying what he thinks the word says. It's hysterical to watch. Sometimes he's even right! The amazing part is that he gets the words actually do say something and he's really interested in it.

Mr. Rogers Impression

Big Boy Underpants

I forgot to mention but Jonah has been trained for pee for about 2 months now. He still like to do poops in a diaper but wears underwear the rest of the day. What a big boy!

Compliments will get you everywhere

Lately, Jonah has realized that when you want something, it helps to be charming.
Last week, I got my hair cut and whenever Jonah wanted something, he'd say, "I love your haircut Mommy!"
Tonight, since it's been a while since the haircut, after he was in his crib, he was calling out for me to come and cover him up (again). I came in and he said, "Mommy, I really like your pants." (I was wearing my same old pajamas!)

Building bridges (and roads)

Jonah and I built a road using cardboard blocks. He was pretty happy with it, but wanted to make it longer. I said "Go ahead and add some more blocks to the end." He came back a minute later and said "There aren't any blocks the right shape." He was right -- we had used all the blocks that fit together to make the road. There were other blocks around, but as he pointed out, they would leave a bump in the road.

I'm a good listener!

We got a laminating machine today. Jonah was so excited about it and wanted to touch it and the laminating paper, etc. I told him a few times to stop touching it all and then I told him he wasn't being a good listener when he kept touching it.

He was talking to himself in bed after I put him down so i went up to see what it was about. He is now pretty much trained for pee in the toilet, so he was saying, "Mommy, I made a pee pee, please change my diaper!" So then when I took him out he said this:

"Mommy, I am a good listener because I didn't touch the lemonade machine... but Grace is not a good listener since she took off her shoes and socks when her Mommy told her to keep them on!" (While visiting Grace and Carter and Rachael and Dan, Grace did do this!)

Some Quotes

While listening to Chicken Soup With Rice song, he hears "I will go away to far off Spain"... He says, "Where's Spain?" I say, "It's far away. You have to take a plane to get there." "You want to go to SPAIN RIGHT NOW!!!!"

"Mommy calls you Honey, like the honey you squish into your tea."

"They are called Sea Horses because they can see underwater."

Spoons

One morning I was making oatmeal for Jonah and I offered him a choice of spoons. I pulled out a yellow one, an orange one, a green one, and a blue one. Not interested. I found one more -- a dark blue one. He asked me what color it was. I said "This one is *dark* blue". He said "I want the *morning* blue spoon". It took me a second to realize he meant "light blue".

Jonah's first attempt at independently spelling his name

Making connections

Jonah (drawing a picture of mommy): "Here's mommy's eyes, and mommy's hair, and mommy's teeth, and mommy's legs, and mommy's penis....." The funny thing about this is that he knows I don't have a penis, and tells me, "Mommy doesn't have a penis. She has a pocket for making babies." I think he was just trying to get my goat.
The picture was pretty cool- lots of circles and straight lines. He looked at it when he was done and told me it looked like me!

This morning at breakfast, Sam asked which color spoon he wanted to use. He took out all the colors. He asked Jonah if he wanted the dark blue spoon, and Jonah said he wanted the "morning blue" spoon. (opposite of dark is morning!)

You're a Man

"You can get so many blocks cuz you're a man!" --Jonah cleaning up blocks.

That's just my cheeks!

Babysitter (Katie): Is that grapes in your cheeks, Jonah?
Jonah: No Katie, that's just my cheeks!

Making connections

Daddy (reading Lightship book): this boats has lights on it.
Jonah: what are those called?
Daddy: they call them lanterns
Jonah: like in the pumpkin!

Mommy and Jonah are at the library for story hour.
The librarian is reading a book Jonah has never seen before about a horse giving rides to animals who fall off of the horse's back. Jonah calls out, "They are gonna want another ride!!!" The librarian says, "Someone has seen this book before!" (he hadn't!)

Today out of the blue, Jonah says, "Necklace like you wear around your neck sounds like Nicholas, like Nick and Maisy".

Watch My Lips

Jonah has been calling his new teacher Karen "Perrin" (Juliet's mom).

He can't really hear the difference, so I've been saying to him, "watch my lips... KKK-aren". He then says, "Perrin". Tonight, listening to him over the monitor, he said, "Watch my lips... PERRIN!"

Too cute.

From the mind of a 2-year-old

Jonah: You used to say "sun bubba" when you were a baby
Me: And now you're a big boy, what do you say?
Jonah: Sun butter!
Jonah (pauses): But you can still say "sun bubba"
Me: OK

Mommy: Look, it's a bulldozer
Jonah: It's kind of like a bulldozer. It's a front-end loader

Jonah: that's daddy's power drill! It's a real power drill. This is Jonah's power drill. It's pretend.
